The Value of Membership

"I could not have survived 30 years in school business without the support I've received from ASBO. No matter how much you may think your problem is unique, it's not. I've always found support from colleagues facing the same issues no matter where they work, and I've shared solutions. We have a lot to learn from one another, so I value my memberships in Tri-State ASBO, New Hampshire ASBO, Vermont ASBO, and ASBO International."

Melvin Burley

Member Spotlight from August 17, 2017

Melvin Burley found his way to school business via a somewhat rocky road. He began as a math and science teacher and later as a contracts administrator and buyer in Baltimore City Public Schools in Baltimore, Maryland, but funding issues cut short his tenure. Melvin was pleased to find a long-term home in Baltimore County Public Schools in Towson, Maryland, where he has served since 2004 as a purchasing agent for the 111,000-student school system.

Melvin takes his responsibilities seriously. He has earned a host of relevant certification titles, including certified public manager (CPM), certified public procurement officer (CPPO), and certified professional public buyer (CPPB). He is active in other related capacities too, having served as the purchasing director, vice president, and president of ASBO MD/DC, for which he continues to serve on three committees. As a member of the Institute for Public Procurement, Melvin completed this national organization’s train-the-trainer classes and looks forward to teaching classes soon.

Clearly, Melvin understands the importance of professional development, and he appreciates that ASBO provides “a direct avenue to related information, professional development and greater understanding of and for the work of a procurement professional.” He encourages those new to the profession to take advantage of as many professional development opportunities as possible, and not just in specific areas of expertise, but across the entire spectrum of school business. “Without ASBO International, I never would have known how much understanding I could obtain by participating and applying myself while getting to know people from every part of the country and even the world,” he says.

Outside the office, Melvin enjoys spending time with his wife and family, whether at church, attending a jazz festival, or taking a cruise!
