ASBO INTERNATIONAL & EDUNOMICS LAB ANNOUNCE NEW EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT SCHOOL BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS

Ashburn, VA – In a joint endeavor to deliver additional high-quality, targeted professional development to enhance the financial and leadership skills of school business professionals, the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) is announcing a new educational partnership with Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy as a part of its University Alliance Program.

Through this collaboration, ASBO International members can enroll in select educational courses at a significantly reduced rate, including Edunomics Lab’s Certificate in Education Finance (CEF) and Wild Ride Ahead: A Workshop on Finances Post ESSER. School business professionals can also apply educational credits earned from these programs towards recertification of ASBO International’s Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations® (SFO®).

The CEF is an interdisciplinary program combining school finance, economics, and leadership with public policy and administration, which helps participants build fluency in how management decisions, wide-ranging policies, and resource allocation intersect to impact student success across multiple contexts, including their own. The Wild Ride Ahead workshop helps participants consider how to weigh budget and spending tradeoffs, invest sustainably and transparently, enhance equity, and build community trust in school finance issues, rooted in the context of the end of pandemic relief funding.

Collectively, these programs help school finance leaders think more strategically about budgeting and spending decisions, identify ways to improve financial sustainability and resource equity, and enhance how they lead their school communities. This educational partnership will allow both organizations to support the evolving needs of school district leaders more effectively in an ever-changing educational and fiscal landscape.

"We are delighted to work with the Edunomics Lab team on providing relevant professional development for our members, whether by helping them meet short-term goals like navigating the ESSER fiscal cliff or devising long-term strategies to allocate resources more equitably to support students,” says Siobhán McMahon, CAE, ASBO International’s Interim Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer.

“We approach school finance differently, more strategically,” says Dr. Marguerite Roza, Edunomics Lab Director and Research Professor at Georgetown. “The goal is to help build the capacity of leaders to make and communicate spending decisions that do the most for their students, support the district’s long-term fiscal health, and strengthen trust with their school communities.”

Registration for the next CEF cohort and the Wild Ride Ahead workshop are currently open. The CEF includes an in-person residency (with options to attend in Pittsburgh, PA on November 8–9, 2023, or Las Vegas, NV on January 18–20, 2024), followed by virtual sessions in January and February 2024. The Wild Ride Ahead workshop is an online event with four virtual sessions on September 28–29 and October 5–6, 2023. Learn more at asbointl.org/Edunomics.
