The Value of Membership

"I could not have survived 30 years in school business without the support I've received from ASBO. No matter how much you may think your problem is unique, it's not. I've always found support from colleagues facing the same issues no matter where they work, and I've shared solutions. We have a lot to learn from one another, so I value my memberships in Tri-State ASBO, New Hampshire ASBO, Vermont ASBO, and ASBO International."

How the New Fiduciary Standards Impact Financial Statements

Thursday, July 25, 2019
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time
CPE/SFO Contact Hours: 1.0

GASB Statement No. 84, Fiduciary Activities, is expected to have a significant effect on the financial statements of most school districts. This webinar will address the issue of classification from two perspectives. First, what activities should be reported as fiduciary funds versus what activities should be reported in the governmental funds? Once it is determined that an activity should be classified as a fiduciary fund, what category should it be reported in—for example, a private-purpose trust fund or the new custodial fund?

In addition, this webinar will address accounting and financial issues associated with fiduciary activities that extend beyond classification issues. These topics include the liabilities that should be reported in a Statement of Fiduciary Net Position and the level of detail required in a Statement of Changes in Fiduciary Net Position. The webinar also will highlight relevant questions and answers from the new Implementation Guide on Fiduciary Activities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the requirements of Statement 84.
  • Exhibit a basic understanding of and relevant answers to questions contained in the Implementation Guide on Fiduciary Activities.
  • Explain the impacts that the new GASB literature on fiduciary activities will have on school districts.

Presenter:

  • David Bean, Director of Research and Technical Activities, Governmental Accounting Standards Board, Norwalk, CT
